2008 ECONOMIC STIMULUS PAYMENT

Starting in May 2008, the Federal Government will begin sending out economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households in the United States. To receive this payment, taxpayers:

  • Must have a valid Social Security number,
  • Cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return, (or eligible to be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return);
  • Have at least $3,000 of income, and
  • File a 2007 federal tax return.

If you were required to file a 2007 federal tax return:

If you filed (or will be filing) a federal tax return, you are automatically registered for the stimulus payment. You do not have to do anything else.

If you were not required to file a 2007 federal tax return:

If you have at least $3,000 of qualifying income and a valid social security number, you may be eligible for the 2008 Economic Stimulus Payment. But only if you file a federal tax return for 2007. To determine if you are eligible for the Economic Stimulus Payment, click here.

If you file a federal return solely for the purpose of receiving the Economic Stimulus Payment, you have until October 15, 2008 in order to file your 2007 federal tax return. There are several sites in Georgia that will remain open after the April 15 tax deadline to help you fill out your return.

If you are eligible to receive the 2008 Economic Stimulus Payment, and you are comfortable with computers, you can prepare your own federal tax return. AARP Tax-Aide (with help from Benefits QuickLINK) and the National Council on the Aging have developed an on-line tool to help seniors apply for the Economic Stimulus Payment. This new online resource allows users to answer a few simple questions and, when finished, print a completed 1040A IRS form - quick and easy!

Get Your Taxes Done Free

If your household earns less than $40,000, you are eligible for free tax preparation at a (VITA) Volunteer Tax Assistance Site. When you go, be sure to ask about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

And be sure to bring these documents with you:

  • Social Security Cards for all family members and correct birthdates for all family members
  • 2006 tax return
  • All W-2's for 2007
  • Form 1098 - Mortgage interest, property taxes
  • Form 1099 - DIV, G, INT, MISC, Q, R, RRB, SSA, for 2007
  • Voided check and savings account number for direct deposit of your refund (This is optional but gets your cash to you fast.)
  • A photo ID (you and your spouse if filing jointly)
  • Joint returns require both filers to be present to sign the return.
  • If you had child care expenses, bring the name, address and tax ID or social security number of the care provider.
  • If you had educational expenses, bring the 1098-T or 1098-E.
