HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity builds houses for first-time homebuyers and lets them pay back the cost over 25-30 years. For more information about the work Habitat for Humanity is doing in the Metro Atlanta area, click here.

How do I apply?

Contact Habitat for Humanity at (404) 223-5180 ext. 100 to sign up for an Application Workshop. After attending a brief presentation, Habitat for Humanity staff will see if you qualify and submit your application.

What if I can't take time off from work?

Application Workshops take place on the third Saturday of every month at 9:00 a.m. sharp. All construction of Habitat for Humanity homes is also done on Saturdays.

What do I need to bring?
  • Federal and state income tax returns for the previous 2 years (including the 1040 and all W2 forms)
  • Proof of any additional income (SSA, SSDI, Child Support, Retirement, etc.)
  • Credit Report
  • Proof of monthly expenses (utilities, insurance, childcare, etc.)
  • Proof of identity (SS card, birth certificate, driver's license)
  • Birth certificate or legal guardianship documents for all dependents
  • Three references (not family members)
  • Savings statements showing a minimum balance of $200 over the past six months. (Checking, Savings, 401k, 403b, annuities, retirement accounts, children's accounts for whom you are the custodial parent)
  • Money order for $10
How long will it take to receive the benefit?

Once you have attended an Application Workshop and been selected to receive a house from Habitat for Humanity, construction usually takes 7-8 weeks.

Is there anything else I need to know?
  • Habitat for Humanity requires each homeowner to invest 250 "sweat-equity" hours in building his/her home and others; make a down payment of $600; lease the home for the first year; and attend 10 of 12 monthly homeowner education meetings.
  • Habitat for Humanity inspects the home at the end of the year. If the home passes inspection the homeowner can start payment on a 25- to-30-year no-interest mortgage.
  • Your monthly mortgage payments to Habitat for Humanity will be under $600 per month.
  • A Step-Up Program is offered for applicants who meet all program requirements, except the savings requirement. These applicants are required to open and maintain an account with a $200 minimum balance for six months.
  • It is strongly recommended that you bring a copy of your credit report to the meeting.
You can request a free copy by calling Equifax at 1-800-997-2493, TransUnion Corporation at 1-800-888-4213, or Experian at 1-888-397-3742, or by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com.
